If someone tells you that your OC is offensive to their culture, fucking listen to them.
If you make, say, a Crystal Gem OC with a vague, "Native American" theme,
and have the character look fucking white
and a Native American person comments telling you that your OC is offensive to their culture
then it's offensive to their culture and you should probably work on improving. When you make a character part of, or based off, a culture that is not yours, do some goddamned research.
It doesn't matter if you're fucking Middle Eastern. Or black. Or whatever your race is or where you're from or how many
Natives you know. Do your goddamned research so you aren't making a fucking caricature. A fucking costume.
Blocking people and being a piss ass because people called you out on being racist, whether or not that was your intention
, fucking understand, apologize, get educated, and learn.
This isn't "Tumblr bullshit". These are REAL LIVE PEOPLE from the cultures YOU are bastardizing and turning into a homogeneous, formless fucking THEME. It may come as a SHOCK to you, but Native Americans have been stamped on for fucking centuries and Native kids being angry about their cultures being continually being turned into tropes and stereotypes IS SOMETHING THAT HAS EXISTED AND EXISTS OUTSIDE OF TUMBLR.
Moral of the goddamned story, if a marginalized person tells you that your character is offensive and playing off stereotypes, it's offensive and playing off harmful stereotypes, whether you meant it to be or not. The thing to do is fucking apologize and learn from your mistakes.
Directed at you, the-Assyrian
My Native friend very fucking calmly and politely tried to inform you about why your character is harmful. You didn't ask questions about her culture, you didn't apologize for making it a caricature of the "~*Native American*~". You blocked us because "I didn't mean for it to be racist" wah wah. You're still racist.
Races and cultures are not themes. They are a living, breathing, people. If these living, breathing people tell you that you are representing their culture incorrectly, they
are right. You
are not. It is as simple as that.
I'm fucking white. This is not a hard concept to grasp.
Posting this with the approval of my friend because she doesn't have the patience to write this out right now.
This really goes for all cultures. If you're going to base something off something, do your goddamned research. This is OC writer 101.
